What is the Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of pupils who are vulnerable to underachievement and close the gap between them and their peers. The school receives Pupil Premium funding for pupils who have been either registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years or who have been in care for 6 months or longer. If you believe your child may be eligible for Free School Meals then please contact our school office as soon as possible.
What is the funding used for?
The school’s priority for all children is to ensure that they receive quality first teaching and support to enable them to make excellent progress and perform well academically. We use the pupil premium income to fund a huge range of additional provisions which support these key pupils and their families. You can read about how we spend this funding by downloading our pupil premium reports.
What kind of support do we provide for pupil premium children?
You will be able to read in the above reports the specific way in which we spend the money. However, our priorities for spending in 2019/2020 are:
- Ensuring that additional Teaching Assistant hours support quality first teaching across KS1/2. Deployment of these hours is reviewed half termly as we analyse progress information.
- Increasing the Teaching Assistant capacity in EYFS to ensure that early gaps in skills are addressed and to lower the pupil to adult ratio to ensure high-quality interactions.
- Funding assertive mentoring sessions for pupils in Y5/6. This is an individual target setting meeting where learning targets are met and behaviour/attendance is discussed with the pupil.
- Running a targeted Excellent Learner Programme in KS2 to ensure that key children develop and utilise good learning skills/dispositions within lessons.
- Offering extra-curricular learning opportunities to raise attainment in maths and reading.
- Ensuring that pupils develop good speech and language skills through targeted intervention in EYFS/KS1.
- Ensuring that pupils develop sound reading skills in KS1 through the intervention programme Every Child a Reader.
- Maintaining the Learning Mentor led breakfast club and operating the THRIVE based nurture units to support social and emotional development.
- Funding additional THRIVE based Teaching Assistant to support pupils in class so that they are ‘ready for learning’.
- Maintaining the Learning Mentors role of running targeted interventions and additional classroom support. (A bespoke package is built around the child/family).
- Funding a Family Support Worker to enable families to effectively support their children and access support groups etc.
How do we know that this funding is being well used?
The school tracks the progress of children who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding both as a group and individually. At the end of each half-term, staff submit data on each child. The Senior Leadership Team review this data and ensure that current provision is resulting in good progress. Where there may be concerns over provision, then this is reviewed and appropriate actions are taken rapidly.
For some children this may result in additional provision being offered, for others it may mean a change of approach or a focus in a slightly different area. We offer a unique approach to meeting the needs of individuals not a ‘one fits all’.
If you have any questions about this then please don’t hesitate to contact any member of staff.
