Reception- Our Zoo Topic Begins!

This week in Reception we have started to think about zoos, ready for our trip next month! Lots of the children showed a real interest in zoo animals through their play last term, so we have used this to plan lots of interesting activities.

This week we talked about how animals are looked after in the zoo, and who helps them if they are unwell- we’ve never seen a tiger at the doctor’s surgery, so we decided they must have their own vet! In literacy we read the story ‘The Zoo Vet’- ask me to tell you about it! We wrote a list of animals that might visit the vet, then filled in some patient information forms. We were also very excited to start building our own zoo vet role-play area in the classroom. We have been adding new things to it each day!

In numeracy this week we have been thinking about doubling numbers to ten and recapping teen numbers. We are very good at recognising all of the numbers and putting them into the correct order. Some of us have even been writing sums and thinking about doubling numbers during our play- look at these lovely number sentences one of the children chose to write!

On Wednesday we had some very kind volunteers from Sainsbury’s come in to school to help clear our Forest School area- we were shocked at how much work they had done, and were all very excited to pop out and see our new, improved area! It really does look different- one child thought a new tree had grown as they had never noticed it before behind all the high undergrowth! We now can’t wait to get back out there next week to start exploring!

On Friday, we played a phonics game on the whiteboard- we had to read words and decide whether they are real words or made up words! It is a great game that the children love, and can be played at home using the following link….

Try us with the phase 3 and phase 4 free games- you’ll be very impressed at how well we do!

This week we have also really been enjoying lots of creative play- we have been painting, making models and drawing beautiful, detailed pictures! We really are fantastic artists!

We are looking forward to another busy week next week!
